MA Spatial Planning and Urban Design

The MA in Spatial Planning and Urban Design at London Metropolitan University aims to revive the notion of the planner-architect and bring propositional planning back to the forefront of urban place shaping. It operates at the threshold of planning, urban design and architecture and is conceived to speculate new spatial planning and urban design practice, and respond to social, economic, environmental and political realities with a particular focus on London.

Students are asked to complete a practical thesis informed by the theory and practice of spatial planning and urban design, and have the opportunity to study in a design unit.

Throughout the year, students gain a variety of insights into the world of planning and urban design through guest lecturers from public and private sector organisations, as well as case study reviews, workshops, exhibitions and events, and site visits across London and the UK.
Teaching is based around conversation groups and seminars, which encourage the students to develop their roles as proposition makers and respondents, through steering, influencing, encouraging and designing. Students have begun research on a range of topics including; revealing the process of emerging Neighbourhood Plans, the expansion of central London in Kings Cross, the attempts at urban branding through planning, and the question of ‘character’.
